On Friday Night, September 24, David Hedison was invited - as part of the Hollywood Celebrity and Memorabilia Show in Chicago - to the Hollywood Palms Cinema, Bar and Eatery for a screening of his classic 1958 film, The Fly. Report on the convention here.
David signed autographs in the theater lobby and did a fun and raucous Q & A
session before the screening at 7:30 PM. The movie was screened in
the Mayan Theater - which was absolutely gorgeous with all the stonework on
the walls and the glyphs and all the other themed decorations.
All eight theaters at the Hollywood Palms are themed. The two best - we
were given a tour before the first autograph session - were the Wizard of Oz
theater
and the Aquatic Theater, which had a poster from another of David's films,
The Enemy Below, hanging on the wall.
During the screening, David and I were treated to a private dinner
(upstairs) in the theatre owner's office. David, of course, had the Beverly
Hills Salad. I had Crab Rangoon with the best plum sauce I have ever
tasted. Ted was a lovely host to us and a great raconteur.
After the screening ended, David came back down to sign autographs for
another hour. I signed some of my
Fly at 50
books.
The Fly screening was the kickoff event for the Chicago Haunts for Hunger
canned food drive - TSA graciously let me bring my can through
airport security, after I declared it.
The Theater was full and David got many questions and he had a line
for his autographs both times we were out in the lobby, with hearses and
a nine foot grim reaper and a display of movie horror masks across the lobby.
A good time was had by all. It was 11:15 PM by the time the Theater's
stretch white limo dropped us off back at the con hotel.
And that was Friday Night.
